SEO stands for search engine optimization. This is basically a way to optimize your website for the search engines to help them to better find you, and send you more targeted traffic. SEO will also help to improve your website rankings, and help you climb to the first page.

It is essential for every webmaster to use SEO whenever possible.

There is on-page optimization, as well as off-page optimization. Both are important, and will work together to bring high quality traffic to your website.

On-page optimization focuses on the content of your website. This includes the title tag, meta tags, and the content on your webpage. When the search engines crawl your website they look for keywords at the top of your webpages, and send you traffic accordingly.

So it is important to place your most important keywords at the top of your webpage, such as the title, and the meta tags. The title is the most important place for you to insert your keywords. But this does not mean that you should load the title with your keywords. Instead you should do the opposite and keep the title short and sweet, using only one or two keywords. The shorter the title, the more emphasis it will get from the search engines.

Your meta description is also important. This should be no longer than about 30 words, and the most important keywords should be at the beginning. This is the content which the search engines will display when your website comes up within the search engines. So write this in such a way that will make people click on your website when they are searching for your keywords.

It is also very important to place your keywords into the first 200 words of your content. After the first 200 words or so, the search engines really do not pay attention to any keywords anymore.

Off-page optimization is all about the back links that you have coming to your website. The more of these back links that you have, the better your website will do. First you will get traffic coming from the websites which are linking to you, plus, when the search engines see this, they will also increase the amount of traffic which they will send you.

To get these back links you simply participate in forums, or leave comments on related websites. You can also contact other webmasters and ask for a link exchange, or you can write lots of articles and submit them to article directories.
